Clean Water Act Section 106 Program
The CWA 106 program is funded through grants received from the U.S. EPA. This program allows the Sac and Fox Nation to maintain the status as “Treatment as a State” for water monitoring. The CWA 106 funds are utilized to monitor water body nutrients and inventory biotic life. This grant allows the water quality specialist to monitor 7 streams/rivers within the Sac and Fox Nation Jurisdiction and to conduct habitat assessments, fish collections, and macro invertebrate collections.
Current grant activities include:
- Monitoring 7 streams within Sac and Fox Nation Jurisdiction: North Canadian River, Deep Fork River, Sand Creek, Wildhorse Creek, Skull Creek, Euchee Creek and Cottonwood Creek.
- Monitor nutrient levels in monitored streams through weekly, monthly and quarterly sampling. The OES performs some tests in-house while others are taken to an outside laboratory.
- Conduct fish collection and identification for specified areas per work plan. This is done with the assistance of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife.
- Conduct Macro-invertebrate collections and identification for habitat assessments on areas specified per grant deliverables. Collections are done by the Water Quality Specialist and then taken to Oklahoma State University for identification.
- Conducting a baseline assessment of rural water well of tribal members. This test’s for basic drinking water parameters. Testing is done at an outside agency.
- Annually create a report that summarizes the prior year’s data. This document is sent to EPA as part of grant requirements and is also available at the request of tribal members and leaders.
